Note from Sarah Harvey
My very first job breaking out as a freelance editor began with Ben at B-Reel. Little did I know, this fortuitous booking would lead me to Squarespace five years later, collaborating once again with some of the very same people from B-Reel.
I was brought in to edit a short documentary about the Making of Material Design at Google. Initially, I was completely lost— I struggled to comprehend what the designers were talking about (designers talking about design gets heady really quickly!) Despite my initial total confusion, Ben’s unwavering direction and guidance reassured me. He never made me feel inadequate; instead, he trusted my abilities and contributions to the project. He respected everyone's input and he provided the space and time for us to mold confusing interviews into a cohesive film. The short film came out really well and is one of my proudest projects. Ben continued to be my biggest cheerleader, booking and referring me for work up to the freelance gig at Squarespace that turned permanent.
Ben was a remarkable leader devoid of ego; extremely rare in our industry. Despite his VP title, he remained approachable, whether for the smallest work issue or the weightiest life questions. When dealing with the insanity of the NYC public school system lottery, he reassured me that my son landed in a great place and not to stress; when I faced a tragic personal loss, Ben displayed such kindness and compassion, offering unwavering support during my grief. It pains me deeply to think of his family experiencing the same sorrow that he once helped me through. You are all in my heart and thoughts, and will continue there.
Ben’s absence is profoundly felt at Squarespace, yet his legacy inspires us all with renewed determination. His confidence and trust in our talents embolden us to make great work and push the boundaries of what we can create. In a recent email, he signed off with these words:
“We only make hits.
We only work with hit makers.”
Ben was a true hit maker and I am so grateful to the band of us he gathered at Squarespace. I will miss him deeply, and will remain inspired by his creative vision, kindness, and leadership.
